A German start up company has recently developed a new technology for creating thin, flexible photovoltaic solar panels.

Heliatek, a German based solar start up, has recently announced a new type of solar technology based on the OLED displays found in smart phones and flat screen T.V’s. These new panels are much lighter and more flexible than current silicon based panel technology and offer a promising future for solar energy efficient windows and building facades.

The new panels are only about 9% efficient (compared to about 15% efficiency in traditional panels). Nevertheless, Heliaket is teaming up with an array of window manufactures to utilize their solar panels as tinted windows for residential and commercial applications.
