EcoBlock
The EcoBlock project, managed by UC Berkeley, is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at exploring the feasibility of electrifying and ecofying an entire block of homes. Located in the Fruitvale area of Oakland, this project involves the comprehensive home performance and electrification of 24 units, complete with rooftop solar installations. Additionally, the project includes advanced stormwater mitigation systems and a curbside EV charging station.
Eco Performance Builders serves as the general contractor for the entire project, overseeing both our in-house work and the coordination of subcontractors. Our in-house team handles the HVAC, plumbing, and insulation, ensuring high standards and quality control. Subcontracted work includes solar installations, roofing, and stormwater systems, allowing us to leverage specialized expertise for these components. This ambitious project, expected to be completed in early 2025, exemplifies our ability to manage complex, multi-faceted initiatives while delivering superior quality and innovation.
ZNE (Zero Net Energy) Home Builds
Over the past 11 years, we’ve successfully partnered to build three all-electric ZNE homes in Oakland. These homes were sold with a unique guarantee that the buyers would not have an electric bill, and if they did, we would cover it. Impressively, all new homeowners received rebates from PG&E each year, highlighting the efficiency and effectiveness of our designs.
These homes were meticulously crafted with superior air quality and comfort in mind. Each home was insulated with cellulose, featured conditioned crawlspaces with vapor barriers, and was equipped with HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation) systems for continuous, healthy ventilation. Post-construction monitoring revealed that the homes maintained consistent temperatures, with room-to-room variations within just 1 degree, and CO2 levels never exceeded 600ppm, ensuring excellent ventilation and air quality.
UC Berkeley: Indoor Air Pollution Research Study (AIM)
In 2021, we were selected for a research project with Lawrence Berkeley Labs focusing on range hood ventilation in homes with children suffering from asthma. This project involved extensive testing, system replacements, and education on the importance of ventilation—followed by comprehensive commissioning and data analysis. The findings were published, showcasing our capability in handling complex research projects and our commitment to improving indoor air quality.
Sonoma Clean Power: Electrification of 10 Showcase Homes
In 2019, we served as the installing contractor for a 10-home research project for Sonoma Clean Energy. We carried out home performance and electrification projects on ten homes, installing high-performance HVAC systems that were monitored for a year prior to and a year after installation. This project demonstrated our expertise in home electrification and our ability to deliver significant improvements in energy efficiency and performance.
